I Like Bugs
By John Flynn
When I was a little
kid
I did what little kids all did
Spill chocolate milk on my mom's rugs
Then go outside and look for bugs
I like bugs
The centipedes and slugs
And little multi-legged works of art
That crawled across the sidewalks of my heart
The crickets and the
butterflies
The bugs that see with compound eyes
The bugs with mandibles and pincers
The one-eighth to three-quarter inchers
As their antennae
would extend
I'd greet each bug that I'd defend
Against the carnage that just might please Backyard Godzillas wearing Nikes
I like bugs
The centipedes and slugs
And little multi-legged works of art
That crawled across the sidewalks of my heart
Some people squash
bugs to feel power
But won't step on one in the shower
Bugs know they have a better chance
If you're not wearing shoes or pants
Praying mantises and
beetles
Spiders, ants, even mosquitoes
Bumble bees and Katydids
Cool insects and arachnids
I like bugs
The centipedes and slugs
And little multi-legged works of art
That crawled across the sidewalks of my heart
