Hound Dog Years
Eddie and a girl named June slow-dance to an Elvis tune
Take the plunge after the hop then wait for one more shoe to drop
Eddie wears his hair slicked back in his T-shirt there's a pack
of butts that all went up in smoke with ands and ifs and vows she broke
Maybe it's the scent of her perfume
On the long dried tracks of some tears
Maybe time can run like a rabbit
But his heart can't hide from them hound dog years
June meets someone sometime later
files her nails and files the papers
Eddie signs in black and blue with the ink from his tatoo
Hot nights of bourbon and Elvis
Headlights and bangin' them gears
That chevy ran like a rabbit
But it never got away from them hound dog years
Eddie kept those years inside but on the day that that Elvis died
He drove to Memphis all alone to gaze upon the empty throne
Standing where the past overtook him
Standing there with his memories and fears
It grabbed Eddie's idol and shook him
Like a rabbit in the teeth of them hound dog years
Eddie's got a brand new life now he never tells
his second wife how
Those memories come to haunt him still and she knows that he never will
Maybe it's the scent of her perfume
On the long dried tracks of some tears
Maybe time can run like a rabbit
But his heart can't hide them hound dog years
