A FolkWax Review
 John Flynn
Dragon
FolkWax Rating:
9 out of 10

This review originally ran in FolkWax #121 on July 23, 2003

John Flynn is not happy with what's happening to his homeland, America. John Flynn's not happy with what's happening to his planet and to mankind. The mature late teen that studied Political Science at degree level [a few years ago now], has the intelligence to understand the game that's being played with lives on this ever spinning "blue sphere." Mankind, planet-wide, has been hijacked by fat cats in suits and ....read more

John Flynn is as close as we come these days to a live Phil Ochs......

Nashville

Country & Folk releases

A disc that's been overlooked is singer/songwriter John Flynn's Dragon (Metta/four). There is equal parts country styling and folk/protest fervor on a set that includes guest vocals from Kris Kristofferson on "Hey Vicente," "Hope Sleeps" and "Benediction." Flynn also has support from a strong musical corps, among them Duke Levine on a host of instruments; bassist Jim Gilmour; drummer/percussionist Shawn Pelton; Steve Elson on sax, recorder and penny whistle; vocalist/flutist Jane Kelly; and Ben Wisch on keyboards, melodihorn and vocals. But Flynn's strong, sometimes frenetic leads and lyrics that address everything from alienation to injustice make this a compelling release.

DRAGON
Singer-songwriter-guitarist John Flynn can't escape his Irish heritage and his people's leanings (or telling fine tales of love, life and merriment. And on his latest CD Dragon........

The Cover-Up

JOHN FLYNN/Dragon
Writer: John Flynn; Producer: Ben Wisch

This is refreshing, a singer-songwriter of today with socially conscious lyrics. In the case of the CD's title tune he sings against the evils of capitalist greed. Wisch's fascinating production features ebb and flow guitar and drum work. Elsewhere on the album, Kris Kristofferson offers backup vocal support.

John Flynn stood on the roof of the dugout at Veteran’s
Stadium in Philadelphia as the boos rained down on him. They poured on him from the high-priced box seats all around and cascaded down from the notorious “700” section high above, pelting him like hailstones. It was the “seventh inning stretch” of a baseball game between the hometown Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals. He’d come out, guitar in hand, to sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” but some things had turned inexorably wrong.

He’d sung for the Phillies’ fans before, right after 9/11, when baseball resumed after the tragedy. A rendition of “God Bless America.....

SONGWRITER'S MONTHLY
January 2002
"This is John Flynn doing what he does best: sending a song special delivery directly to your heart and soul. Kris Kristofferson has compared John to the best writers he knows.  To find anyone with word skills comparable to Flynn, you would do better looking in the literary community than in songwriting circles.  Simply put, John Flynn is a master of imagery, rhyme and emotion. Very highly recommended"
Review of John Flynn House Concert
Last night a very special group of friends came together at my home to hear John Flynn do his best performance I have ever seen and followed it up with hours of group singing and camaraderie. I have not heard music like this outside of a festival environment and was even more tickled to
have it be in my home. But, don't take my word for it......(click)
Town Talk Profile of the Week
It's hard to fit John Flynn into a specific artistic category. He's a writer, and a brilliant one at that. He's a poet who makes beautiful music with his words. He is a singer and songwriter of children's music, who is just as much at home in a beachside bar or a folk festival, singing to the children's parents and grandparents. So let's just say that John Flynn is an artist, in every sense of the word... (click)

John is the only artist who can make the kids giggle on one track then move the adults to tears on the next. A powerful writer.  Master of word and emotion... (click)

Someone with a very loud voice needs to climb a very tall building and yell this artist's praises. It is criminal that most of the fans of the genre haven't heard of him at the same level as Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin and John Gorka.
