The school bus is fifteen minutes
away and my kid is finishing his waffles before we leash-up our 11 month old
Sheppard Chief (aka Psycho Frisbee Chaser) and go down to the corner. I’ve been
out doing some promotional shows in Texas and Tennessee. Although promotional
is music–speak for free the trips were for the most part very rewarding. This
past Wednesday evening before my first-ever headlining set in music city,
country music star Lee Ann Womack cooked dinner for us in her lovely home. As I
drank a glass of wine with Lee Ann’s husband, my old friend producer/publisher
Frank Liddell, I had to smile thinking how far I’d come since my first days in
on the sidewalks of Nashville all those years ago. They’ve long since torn down
the phone booth at Roy Acuff Place and 16th Avenue but I can still
remember slipping scrounged quarters into the coin slot– not that I was THAT
poor but prior to cell phones when your office was the street you had to had to
travel with some jingle in your pockets. I can still hear the polite steel in
the voices of all the receptionists whose job it was to deny me access to their
bosses, and their bemused pity on the phone if I could keep them talking
log enough for the operator to break in and ask for more money. Okay, no more
day dreaming… time to help someone find his sneakers and book bag.
