October 8, 2005

On Thursday night Sister Helen told the audience at the Mercy Concert that our country was no worse, no more vengeful, than all of the enlightened nations of the world who have abolished the death penalty (Turkey has recently joined this list but the U.S. still stands proudly with the likes of Iran, Pakistan and China). Our citizens are just as good and kind as anybody else, said Sister. They’re just asleep. Asleep and afraid.

Thursday night we roused the dozing and made joyful sounds to the bolster the faintest of hearts.

My deepest thanks to Kevin O’Connell, New York's Franciscan Holy Name Province, Sister Helen Prejean, Sonny Ochs, Dan Rottenberk, Bill Belz, Sally Millbury Steen,  and my brother and sister musicians: Kim, Reggie, Dave, Sonia, Pat, Sandy, Jonathan, and Greg for helping to wind up the alarm clock!
