8/2

Busy week! Just back from NYC where we did BVs with Jane Kelly Williams in the studio yesterday. Jane could give singing lessons in heaven and it’s really an honor to have her on my CD again. Tomorrow and Thursday I head back while Larry Campbell lays down tracks. Some of you will remember LC from my Sliced Bread record. Many more know him as Bob Dylan’s lead guitar player for most of the past decade. Larry is playing with the Emmylou Harris/ Elvis Costello tour. They're just got back from Europe and I’m really excited that he’s making time in a really tight schedule to be with us. I heard from Kris Kristofferson a couple weeks ago, he’s touring in Australia but will try to sing on a track or two for us at the end of the month. Kris has given me permission to do a twenty year old previously unreleased song of his on my record. It’s called HALL OF ANGELS and I’m so proud to be allowed to be the first artist to bring this song to light. I’m also doing a cover of Phil Och’s beautiful ballad PLEASURES OF THE HARBOR on this album. It’s really been a joy to put my voice to the work of two of my all time favorite writers. The CD will also include ten of my new songs. I’m really anxious for folks to hear them. I’m off to Longwood Gardens today where I'm appearing in a TV commercial…. Busy week!

Just checking in…

Had a wonderful time on Kids Corner last night.  WXPN’s new digs are really great and I look forward to appearing at World Café Live in the fall.

The new CD is off to a good start.  Earlier this month we tracked “live” with a bass player and drummer for three days in NY and got twelve songs down.  We’ve got Denny McDermott on drums for this project. Denny played on Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis”,  and on bass – John Conti.  John played on “I WILL NOT FEAR”.  The recording studio is always an education to me. I’ve literally spent a very tiny fraction of one percent of my career in one, and slowly, over the course of  albums and years, I’m actually beginning to feel pretty comfortable there. I’ll be resuming work on the album  in a couple weeks.

We’re doing the CD with Ben Wisch again. I’m such a huge fan of Ben’s production and have an implicit trust in his vision and understanding of my music.  It’s a joy to be working with him again.

This is my second album for my friends at MettaFour Records. Hermetta Harper, MettaFour’s guiding force,  has had her hands full with the early success of the label. (They are expanding their roster and have just finished a CD with California singer-songwriter John Tee Howard.)  For some time and out of the kindness of her heart, Hermetta has also been carrying the additional burden of handling my bookings for me and I’d like to publicly thank her for all her faith and great work on my behalf. With the new workload placed on her by the label, Hermetta has recently turned over the booking chores to our friend Annie Guthrie. Annie manages her dad Arlo’s career and I’m very excited that she’s willing to help me out as well.

More on all this and a lot of other exciting stuff later…

Thanks so much to everyone for their prayers and good wishes in the past weeks. They certainly meant a great deal to my family. We feel very blessed by the circle of friends who have found us through my songs.
