5/25
I'm proud of the folks around here. In a district referendum, they voted
overwhelmingly (4:1) yesterday to dig into their own pockets and help fix up our
increasingly troubled schools. Yepper folks! They voted FOR a tax increase. Ever
since bussing was instituted back in the seventies, this region has been the
private school capital of the nation. (You know that beautiful campus where
Robin Williams made "Dead Poet Society"? That's not too far from here.)
Anyway when the busses rolled in all the financial clout pulled out. Many of
those who voted yesterday are elderly. They've already more than done their bit
and no longer have any skin in the game. Talk about a generational transfer of
wealth? Plus, these are tough times. All that notwithstanding it seems we're not
all really as stingy, small minded and short sighted as our leaders and media
moguls want us to believe we are. Way to go neighbors! -JF
