December 31, 2004
I just had to write to thank
everyone who came out to our holiday show and silent auction Wednesday night. We
had our biggest turnout ever; had a great time; and raised over a thousand
dollars for Camp Dreamcatcher. The night could not have happened without the
generosity of the Merion Tribute House and my friends, especially Toni Nolek,
Sheryl Goldberg, Dan and Donna Rottenberk. My heartfelt thanks also to Bob and Sis,
JoAnne, the Kristoffersons, John Brazer, the Phillies, Mike Lemon Casting, Cooldog House
Concerts, Hermetta, and everyone else who contributed of their time, energy or talent to
help us in a wonderful cause.
What a year we’re saying so long to tonight.
The news of the disaster in the paper each day, the sheer scale of the human
suffering, seems to surpass our abilities to comprehend, let alone respond in a
meaningful way. As a
friend pointed out to me over a cup of coffee this week, enormous leaps of faith
are now required. Not only are we being asked to
entrust those lost to God’s care; God is being asked to entrust the
survivors to ours.
May compassion that is being called forth from the very heart of the world
this week guide and sustain us in the new year.
Peace,
John

Words to a new song that I hope to debut this week at the holiday concert. Hope
you're all having a safe and happy Christmas! -JF
The Jesse Tree by John Flynn
Then I heard Isaiah shout
From the stump a shoot shall sprout
From the root a branch shall spring
God is changing everything
Chorus:
Oh children come with me
and we shall trim the Jesse tree
Praise God and glory be
Born us of the Jesse tree
Lighted candles in the dark
John and Matthew, Luke and Mark
Jeremiah, Samuel
Micah and Ezekiel
Foretold in the prophesies
Of two hundred centuries
God shall soon among us dwell
We'll call him Emmanuel
chorus
Each bough adorned by love inspired
Noah’s rainbow, David’s lyre
Jesse’s staff, Josiah‘s scroll
The whale that swallowed Jonah whole
The lions that for Daniel slept
The tears that Hezekiah wept
The crown from Solomon’s own head
The stalk of wheat Ruth harvested
Jacobs ladder, Joseph’s coat
The shell, the dove and fishing boat
A scepter, star, and little lamb
Who shall be called the son of man
chorus
And I heard Isaiah shout
from the stump a shoot shall sprout
And from it’s roots a branch shall spring
God is changing everything
